Academic Leadership Profiles
Mark S. Sothmann
Mark S. Sothmann, Ph.D. joined the Indiana University School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences in 1995 as Professor of Health Sciences and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies. He became Acting Dean in 1996 and Dean in 1997. His administrative appointments includes being Associate Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine from 1997 through 2004, the year that the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences emerged from the School of Medicine as a free-standing school on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus. He is also a founding Professor of the Indiana University School of Informatics.
Sothmann received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Northern Iowa in 1971 and his doctorate in exercise physiology from Purdue University in 1982. He spent 13 years on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and held clinical faculty appointments in the Department of Medicine of the University of Wisconsin Medical School-Milwaukee Clinical Campus and the Department of Preventive Medicine of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
His research has focused on the impact of exercise as a treatment intervention for neurochemical aspects of chronic diseases such as hypertension, and human performance in extreme environments. He has written more than 50 scientific publications and reports. Sothmann's research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and various foundations and state and local agencies.
He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions and a member of the American Physiological Society where he has held numerous professional service appointments. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals in his field including being associate editor of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, been as science advisor to the NASA Exercise Countermeasure Program -- Johnson Space Center, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Veterans Administration and the National Institutes of Health.
He has chaired the research committee of the national Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions and served as chairman of the Midwest Deans Association of Schools of Allied Heath Professions at Academic Health Centers. He is a member of the Indiana State Department of Health -- Health Care Professions Development Commission, the Clarian Health Partners Board Committee on Education and Research, and the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center Board of Directors.
Sothmann is a recipient of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Foundation Award for Research and Creative Endeavors and the Glen W. Irwin, Jr. M.D. Experience Excellence Recognition Award at Indiana University.
Denny Armington
Denny Armington is the chief executive officer of Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, Inc. and the principal RHI representative partnering with Dean Mark Sothmann in the development of the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Studies & Engineering Research.
Armington came to RHI in 2000, after managing the West Coast Operations Division for RehabCare Group. Prior to that, he held administrative/director positions in public and private rehabilitation companies, disease management companies, and public and private, not for profit rehabilitation and acute care hospitals.
Armington is active in the hospital industry serving on local and regional industry related committees and task forces and serving as a voluntary surveyor for CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission. He holds a Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science degree form the University of Iowa. Armington is the co-visionary who created the ICRSER and represents the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.
Neil Oldridge
Oldridge is former professor of Physical Therapy in the IU School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences and Professor of Medicine in the IU School of Medicine, Associate Director of the IU Center for Aging Research and Regenstreif Scientist. Oldridge's research has been in rehabilitation with a focus on quality of life and cost effectiveness issues related to health care. He represents the interest of the ICRSER as the Interim Director.
Phillip K. Hardwick
Vice President of the Indiana University Foundation, Hardwick has more than 35 years of experience arranging philanthropic partnership and has successfully organized and more than $1.038 billion for the IUPUI Comprehensive Campaign. Hardwick is devoting 60 percent of his time to the fund raising efforts of the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research.
