Philanthropic Investment Rationale
In Indiana, 35 percent of adults report arthritis or chronic joint problems. In addition, there are approximately 1 million people with disabilities, and in 2001 there were over 33,000 occupational injuries that required rehabilitative care.
While the cost of rehabilitation is significant, preventative care and early intervention programs can dramatically reduce the costs associated with disabilities. It is estimated that every $1 invested in rehabilitation returns $11 in benefit back to the state through the recapture of lost wages and productivity gains related to an increase in mobility. Every $1 invested in a research center typically returns $10 in external funding to the state.
Further, as many as 42 new jobs are generated for every $1 million in external contracts and grants. Assuming that the Center will generate $3 to $4 million per year in five years, more than 150 new jobs in Indiana could be associated with its work and partnerships.

Designating Your Gift
You may designate your gift for any purpose that contributes to the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research: operations, bricks & mortar, faculty salary support or equipment.. Among the most useful gifts, however, are unrestricted gifts -- those designated for wherever the need is greatest.
These gifts provide much-needed flexibility to an otherwise rigid state-appropriated budget. They allow ICRSER to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and meet challenges and opportunities that often arise after state budgets are set.
Endowed Funds: The Gifts That Keep On Giving
An endowment is an investment in the future of the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research and its partnerships.
When you use your charitable gift to establish an endowment, the gift is invested with two goals in mind: to make the principal grow faster than the rate of inflation, and to provide spendable income for whatever specific purpose you have designated.
The principal is never invaded, and any earnings over a certain amount -- usually 5 percent annually -- are channeled back into the fund to keep it healthy and growing at a pace which exceeds inflation. Well-managed endowments can generate income indefinitely. That fact makes them uniquely valuable to the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research, and therefore especially attractive to donors who wish to leave a legacy.
Gift Agreements
Whenever an endowed gift fund is established, a non-binding gift agreement is created to set forth the specific criteria of your intent for the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences & Engineering Research. This agreement ensures that your gift will be used as you intend and may set out provisions for alternative uses, should it become impossible or impractical to carry out your original intention (as when, for instance, advances in knowledge render a given field of study obsolete).
For these reasons, ICRSER requires that all endowed funds have a written gift agreement on file. ICRSER development staff will work with you to draw up this agreement during the establishment of your gift to fund operations, bricks & mortar, faculty salary support or equipment. Call us to assist you in maximizing your philanthropic contributions.
